Break Through

Well I have really been struggling with PLC's (Personal Learning Communities) at my school. I was buried in a lot of random data and overwhelmed with what were supposed to be doing last year. This year did not look any better the stakes were much higher. But today we were looking at some data, pulling information about what we had done and what had gone well. We found the area we had made a difference and discussed what we had done to make this happen and made instructional decision based on this information! We finally did it! I can't believe it and I don't know if we can keep it up but it was nice to have some type of positive moment!

  1. Cindy,

We have PLC's here as well. Every week we are given data to look at and make some sense of it, which as you can tell, we have no clue. Last year's PLC's were more about colaborating with other teachers, but this year its all about bringing the scores up. I understand scores need to go up, but what about what the child does in the classroom. Does that matter anymore?

  2. David I am so glad to hear that you also feel the child needs to come first not the numbers!!!!!!!! We came up with a data collection sheet. We are putting pre-test scores and post-test scores to help us organize the data. But it is still very overwhelming!

  3. Cindy, what are PLC's? Why do you use them? I'm sorry that may be a crazy question, but I honestly have no clue what they are.

  4. PLC stands for Professional Learning Community. The idea is to put teachers in charge of decision making for the district by involving them in the creation process of curriculum. Within this PLC we also look at student data and make decisions on what we are focusing on and how each teacher is getting students to preform. It is a great idea but it is EXTREMELY time consuming.
