What are your beliefs on homework? I work in a low income school and always struggle with how much or if any homework should be sent home. Many of my students don't have a support system at home and they often get stuck in a cycle of not getting it done so then their grades come down which causes them to lose hope. BUT on the other side of the coin they need to learn responsibility outside of the school room and how to manage their time and work to get things done.
What do you do in your classrooms?

Homework is a big one. I struggle with homework on a weekly basis. I get so frustrated when I come up with a hundred ways to try and get my students to turn in their work on time, and they work for a week or two, but then my student or students start back with their old behavior. I try not to assign too much homework, but I am not the only teacher my students have. I believe that yes students should learn the responsibility of getting their work done and on time, but like you said many of them have challenging home lives. I guess what I would do is offer homework opportunity for those students, or I might start spending a couple hours a week allowing those students to work in my classroom after school. The safe/quiet environment might just work for them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice. I would love to offer after school help but right now I have a 10 and 12 year old and I really feel I have to give them as much time as possible. Balancing teaching and home life is a tricky business! I already go in an hour early to plan/grade because there is so little of my scheduled plan time not taken up with meetings for PLC or student issue. Hope your next plan works for longer than two weeks. It eats up so much time chasing this stuff.
